45 cm gold plated SS chain included.
Magnesite is a naturally white to gray mineral composed of magnesium carbonate. Because of its porous nature and veining, it’s been dyed for over a century to imitate more expensive stones like turquoise. This practice became especially popular in the 20th century as demand for turquoise jewelry surged, particularly in the American Southwest and among bohemian fashion circles.
The name magnesite comes from the Magnesia region of Thessaly, Greece, where the mineral was first identified. The term was first applied in 1795 by J.C. Delaméthrie to various magnesium salts, and later refined by A. Brongniart in 1807 to refer specifically to magnesium carbonates. The Ancient Greeks and Romans used magnesite in construction and pottery, appreciating its durability and heat resistance.
Meanwhile, Indigenous peoples in North America valued it for ceremonial purposes and as a trade item. Magnesite was often carved into beads and ornaments, especially by tribes in California and the Pacific Northwest. These beads - sometimes referred to as "shell money" or "magnesite money" - were highly valued and used in ceremonial regalia, spiritual practices, and as a form of currency. Unlike other beads that were strung together, magnesite beads were often traded individually, highlighting their worth and symbolic power. Some tribes believed magnesite carried spiritual energy, using it in rituals to promote peace, clarity, and connection to the spirit world. Its calming properties made it a favored stone for meditation and vision quests, and it was sometimes buried with the deceased as a token of protection or guidance in the afterlife.
Magnesite is known for its deeply relaxing energy. It’s believed to calm the mind, ease anxiety, and promote emotional balance.
It’s said to enhance meditation, intuition, and creative visualization as well as encouraging for self-love.
Dyed magnesite doesn’t share the same mineral composition as true turquoise (which is a copper aluminum phosphate), it mimics the look convincingly - often with striking blue-green hues and matrix-like veining. It’s a favorite in affordable jewelry and beadwork, especially for those who love the turquoise aesthetic without the price tag.
While dyed magnesite may not be a “classic” gemstone, it’s a beautiful blend of nature and human creativity, with plenty of spiritual charm to go around.
