Benzoin has a long history of use stretching back thousands of years, particularly in regions of Southeast Asia where the resin originates. It was harvested from trees of the genus Styrax, most notably in Sumatra, Java, and Thailand, and became a valued commodity in trade routes linking Asia to the Middle East and Europe.Ancient cultures prized it not only for its fragrance but also for its perceived spiritual and medicinal qualities.
In the Middle East, benzoin was incorporated into incense blends used in temples and religious ceremonies. It was often combined with frankincense and myrrh, creating aromatic mixtures believed to purify sacred spaces and carry prayers to the divine. Islamic traditions also valued benzoin in perfumery and medicine, where it was used to soothe ailments and as a base for aromatic oils.
In Europe, benzoin became popular during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, arriving through trade with the East. It was used in church rituals, particularly in Catholic liturgy, where incense symbolized sanctification and the presence of the divine. Apothecaries also employed benzoin in tinctures and balms, believing it had protective and healing properties. By the 17th century, it was a common ingredient in “Friar’s balsam,” a medicinal preparation used for respiratory issues and wound care.
In Southeast Asia, where benzoin trees grow naturally, the resin was deeply embedded in local spiritual practices. Communities burned it during ceremonies to honor ancestors, ward off malevolent spirits, and invite prosperity. Its role in traditional medicine was equally important, as it was used to treat infections and calm the mind.
Never leave burning incense unattended.
